We are participating in an interesting debate, with varied reflections on social phenomena that have been expressed in various areas of daily life and, consequently, have been clearly evident in the education system at all levels. These reflections have aroused the interest of educational communities and public policy makers in different parts of the world, and reflect the demands expressed by students, parents, teachers, workers and other actors to achieve an education free of discrimination on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
The demands of these groups of people, sometimes articulated as social movements, or as organisations dedicated to the study of complex social problems, or simply as spontaneous groups, place special emphasis on highlighting issues that are emerging with increasing force, such as gender-based violence, inequalities in participation and access to symbolic resources, and the persistent discrimination faced by people in educational spaces, among others.
