Abstract

While the answer to this question may seem simple, it is not. At least there has been no unequivocal answer in the last half century. In these 50 years we have gone from the most unbridled optimism to the most frustrating pessimism. And perhaps it is neither one nor the other.

The starting point is the 1960s, along with the hippy movement, the cold war, the battle for the conquest of space, ‘make love not war’... there was an inordinate confidence that education could change the world, make the world fairer and better. The idea was simple, you can improve education and with that you will improve society, i.e. education as an engine of change.
