Inclusive schools for social justice

If the assertion that school is an inequitable and unjust institution that contributes to the perpetuation of an inequitable and unjust society is true, the assertion that school is one of the most effective means of combating inequality and social exclusion is no less true. Indeed, the school not only excludes and discriminates against many students on the basis of ability, age, race, social class, gender or sexual orientation, but, with its power to award degrees, it is also an instrument for justifying an inequitable society based on meritocracy. In this way, schools, rather than reproducing inequalities, justify and reinforce them. However, as we argue, the school is also one of the most powerful agents for social justice: turning the school into a socially just institution helps to fight injustice. The key question is how.
